Sandeep Mathrani Chief Executive Officer
As a leader in the real estate industry with more than 20 years of experience, Sandeep Mathrani is the chief executive officer and director of GGP, the second largest retail real estate owner in the United States. Prior to joining GGP in 2010, Mathrani was president of retail for Vornado Realty Trust, where he oversaw U.S. retail real estate. For eight years, Mathrani held the position of executive vice president at Forest City Ratner, where he was responsible for their retail development and leasing in the New York City metropolitan area. He serves on the board of trustees for the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), on the executive board and as a second vice-chair of NAREIT, and as a member to the board of directors of Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. He holds a master of engineering, master of management science and bachelor of engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
Shobi Khan President and Chief Operating Officer
As president and chief operating officer, Mr. Khan’s oversight includes asset management, investments, joint-venture partnerships and day-to-day operations. Prior to GGP, Mr. Khan served as U.S. chief investment officer at Bentall Kennedy, one of North America’s largest real estate investment advisors, where he held direct responsibility for U.S. investment activity and served on the company’s management group and investment committees. Prior to Bentall Kennedy, Mr. Khan was senior vice president of investments at Equity Office Properties Trust. During his 11 years at EOP, he led the underwriting of $16 billion in office REIT mergers and was involved with EOP’s $39 billion sale to Blackstone in 2007. Prior to joining EOP in 1996, Mr. Khan served with Katz Hollis, Inc. in Los Angeles, where he completed more than $5 billion in tax allocation bond transactions and public/private-financing assignments throughout the United States. Before joining Katz Hollis, he was with Arthur Andersen in San Francisco, where he was responsible for various real estate consulting engagements. Mr. Khan holds an MBA from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
Michael Berman Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Berman oversees GGP’s capital markets, finance, accounting and investor relations functions. He joined GGP in December of 2011. He brings more than 25 years of combined experience in the real estate and financial industries. Prior to his role as CFO of GGP, Mr. Berman served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Equity LifeStyle Properties. During 2003, Mr. Berman was an associate professor at the New York University Real Estate Institute. He was a managing director in the investment banking department at Merrill Lynch & Co. from 1997 to 2002. Mr. Berman holds an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business; a J.D. from Boston University School of Law; and a bachelor's degree from Binghamton University in New York. Mr. Berman is a member of the Columbia Business School Real Estate Advisory Board and a board member and chairman of the Audit Committee for Brixmor Property Group, Inc.
Alan Barocas Senior Executive Vice President, Leasing
Prior to joining GGP, Mr. Barocas was the principal of Alan J. Barocas and Associates, a retail real estate consulting group he founded in May of 2006, specializing in assisting retailers, developers and investment groups with growth and investment strategies. His client list included Under Armour, Calvin Klein, Fossil, New York & Company, Vornado Realty Trust, Advent International and Abbell Financial Investments. Prior to May of 2006, Mr. Barocas spent 25 years with Gap Inc., where he was instrumental in leading its three divisions (Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy) in developing and executing their real estate growth strategies. In January of 2007, Mr. Barocas was named to the board of directors of Stage Stores Inc., Houston, Texas. Mr. Barocas is a past trustee of ICSC and a graduate of University at Albany with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Marvin Levine Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer
In more than 30 years of practicing law, Mr. Levine has handled numerous sales and acquisitions of community shopping centers, big box power centers, regional malls, office buildings and mixed use properties. Mr. Levine has considerable experience with development projects from the initial public approval process through construction, leasing and ultimate permanent financing. Certain of his transactions have had values in excess of $500 million with the average transaction in the $5 million to $50 million range. He also was lead counsel in the initial public offering of a private developer into an entity now publicly traded on the NYSE. Most recently, Mr. Levine was heavily involved in the structuring of complicated participation multiple party ventures to maximize value while making sure all potential tax related advantages were integrated into the final structure. Representative clients have included Acadia Realty Trust, Vornado Realty Trust and Thor Equities. His professional affiliations include the International Council of Shopping Centers and the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Levine earned a J.D. from New York University and a Bachelor of Science from Lehigh University and is admitted to the Bar in New York, California, Pennsylvania and Nebraska.
Brian McCarthy Executive Vice President, Asset Management
Brian McCarthy is executive vice president of asset management for GGP. He oversees the management, operations, tenant coordination and ordinary capital deployment within GGP’s portfolio. Mr. McCarthy’s real estate career began in 1983 with The Rouse Company as a college intern in development. After graduation, McCarthy held multiple field positions in marketing and specialty leasing. In 1997 Brian arrived at GGP as a portfolio analyst. Over the last 17 years he has held numerous positions in asset management for GGP, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Asset Management for the East region. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. McCarthy is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and holds three professional licenses from this institution (CRX, CMD, CSM).
Richard Pesin Executive Vice President, Anchors, Development and Construction
Mr. Pesin oversees GGP’s Development, Construction, Anchor and Big Box Leasing. Since joining GGP in January of 2011, Mr. Pesin has initiated and is executing a retail development pipeline in excess of $2.5 billion. Prior to GGP, Mr. Pesin was executive vice president and director of retail development for Forest City Ratner Companies where he oversaw all aspects of retail development and leasing. Mr. Pesin led the company’s program to bring innovative shopping centers to underserved urban markets. During his 15 year tenure with Forest City, Mr. Pesin was directly responsible for more than 4.5 million square feet with a cost of more than $1.5 billion of new development. Mr. Pesin is a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science and shortly thereafter in 1985 he began his career in the shopping center industry.
Tara Marszewski Senior Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer
Ms. Marszewski serves as chief accounting officer for GGP. She oversees all aspects of the company’s accounting and financial reporting, including financial operations, property accounting, and SEC reporting and compliance. Ms. Marszewski joined GGP in January 2012. Prior to joining GGP she was a senior manager in the real estate audit practice at KPMG, LLP, where she spent 10 years focusing on both public and private REITs, as well as equity funds. Ms. Marszewski is a CPA and graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois.
Julie Knudson Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
Prior to GGP, Ms. Knudson was a Human Resources executive in organizations spanning a range of sectors, including Echo Global Logistics, a provider of technology-enabled transportation services, DigitalGlobe, a satellite imagery provider for government and commercial customers, Navitaire, an Accenture Company serving the airlines industry, and YesMail, a digital marketing firm. Ms. Knudson received her Bachelor's Degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois and began her career at Peterson Consulting as a financial consultant and CPA prior to assuming responsibility for human resources. She has also served as the Country Director in Rwanda for the Clinton Foundation and is a director for a private foundation.
